The purpose of public transportation is to provide safe, reliable, and eco-efficient ways for people to move within and between cities – and this aligns perfectly with KONE’s long-standing mission: to improve the flow of urban life. In order to contribute to a better quality of life in urban environments, public transportation systems need reliable, safe and eco-efficient solutions that are tailored to their precise needs. We provide innovative elevators, escalators, and automatic building doors – all of which can be kept running smoothly around the clock and help to enhance asset management with smart services that enable predictive, proactive maintenance.
Our solutions can be seen in use in some of the world’s busiest and most complex public transport systems – such as Washington, London, Singapore, and Shanghai – helping to deliver safe, reliable people flow that keeps people and cities moving around the clock.
Piper Networks helps transit operators enhance signaling systems by providing ultra-precise, real-time positioning information for trains, buses, and equipment. Using advanced Ultra-Wideband radios built specially for the transit industry, rail and subway clients can use this precise location data to improve the performance of Positive Train Control and Communication Based Train Control systems that are fundamental to operational safety.
Piper’s technology also helps operators increase rider throughput and improve headways by allowing trains to run closer together and more frequently. In addition to proximity data, Piper Networks offers solutions that improve worker safety, wireless wayside communications, and rider access to information.

EULYNX is an European initiative launched by 13 railway Infrastructure Managers. Aiming for defining and standardizing interfaces in the future digital control command communication, signaling and automation system, the goal of EULYNX is a significant reduction of the lifecycle cost for signaling systems. Digitization brings major advantages to the railway system like continuous monitoring for condition based maintenance. On the contrary, there are a number of challenges with a widely distributed safety system that have been taken up by the EULYNX and result in a harmonization of approval processes in EU.
The cooperation between the ERTMS Users Group and EULYNX accelerated the emergence of the common cooperation in Reference CCS Architecture (RCA), which enables IMs to modernize their systems by going beyond the currently available ETCS L2 implementations. RCA is important for the future of the railway system because by using shared specifications, it creates a more attractive system/component market with larger scales, reduces the integration effort and lifecycle complexity. Moreover, by designing a system with built-in upgradability, it allows the railways to integrate innovations faster. This increased performance-/TCO-ratio will help to rise the competitiveness of the railway sector and, in the longer run, the market share of rail.
